A tap dancer in the golden era of movie musicals, Eleanor Powell dealt with Hollywood her way. As a rookie, she asked for and received a ridiculous salary and string of starring roles that featured her perfect mastery of tap- lightning speed, energy, and ease. At the height of her career, Ellie made another demand: a break to raise her son. During the hiatus, Ms. Powell pursued ordination, and, although she did dance after retiring, her career was almost forgotten until Fred Astaire admitted she was the only woman he’d danced with that was capable of outdoing him.
