For business travelers who want to feel connected to home or for vacationers who want a little something different, the Wild Palms in San Jose, California is a perfect boutique hotel. All throughout the property are touches that make it comfortable and happy and that demonstrate the thoughtfulness of the hotel’s planners. For starters, the property’s designers went out of their way to conjure up atmosphere, that elusive ingredient in effective places.
In what might otherwise be an average travelers’ hotel steeped in the ennui of Silicon Valley, they used textured fabric, heavy curtains, lit candles, splashy color, and creative intuition to bring about a homey, Mediterranean-inspired refuge.
Wild Palms’ guest rooms surround a nicely planned pool area, complete with cabanas and plenty of creative seating options in the shade and in the sun. The blend of outdoor and indoor areas throughout the hotel is fun and includes a quasi-outdoor lounge and an airy breakfast space that serves up free goodies in the morning. Free internet and printer access makes business tasks a breeze, and energy bars on checkout get travelers ready for the road.
The service is also excellent. When we stayed to check things out and our request for rooms with two queen beds was unable to be met, the hotel gave us an additional room free of charge.
All in all, this place is a charming surprise in an area distinctively void of surprises. It seems that every opportunity has been taken to intentionally anticipate and fill visitors’ wants and needs.
