As a French chain, Sofitel has only eight locations in the United States, so Sofitel Minneapolis is not only one of the best hotels in the Twin Cities, it’s also unique. Its French roots run deep, and many guests choose Sofitel because of the sophisticated, European influence on everything from the restaurant menu to the gift shop selections to the powder room beauty products (Roger et Gallet). It’s a great hotel.
Sofitel’s public spaces are trying hard to surmount their formerly 1980s business-oriented design. Careful minimalism and select splashes of color are doing a decent job, but the busy bar area and classic French salon restaurants are especially successful, as they create an intimate feel that contrasts with the cavernous atrium of the lobby. The free croissants and coffee served on some weekend mornings soften the edge, too.
Guest rooms are where this hotel really wins. Each room is designed to be like a mini suite and offers fresh orchids, candles, and more toiletries than you can imagine. These rooms are private and beautiful with an emphasis on relaxation, romance, and bounty.
Despite its location in what looks like a business park, Sofitel can offer a lovely getaway or just a great night out.
Must-dos:
Take your time in the fantastic gift shop, which offers standard sundries, as well as gifts for the connoisseur of all things française.
Check the band schedule. The bar hosts talented jazz musicians and draws lots of aficionados and minglers.
Crash at Sofitel if you’re visiting the Mall of America and want a quieter experience than the nearby, family-friendly hotels offer.
Consider a weekend stay if you’re in the mood for love; Sofitel’s weekdays are mostly favored by business travelers.
